What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of periodontal diseases, which are pathologies affecting the supporting tissues of the tooth: gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and root cementum. The main objective is to preserve the health of the periodontal tissues, regenerating damaged ones or, in more severe cases, replacing compromised teeth with dental implants with immediate or delayed loading.

The Causes of Periodontal Disease

The main cause of periodontitis is the accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar on the teeth, often due to poor daily oral hygiene.
Plaque contains millions of bacteria that irritate the gums, causing gingivitis, the initial form of the disease. Typical symptoms include:

It consists of the controlled incision of the gums to access the roots of the teeth and remove plaque and tartar from deep within. This procedure also helps to reduce periodontal pockets and improve long-term oral hygiene.

2. Bone and Gum Regeneration

When there is a loss of bone or gum tissue, it is possible to intervene with autologous tissue grafts taken from the palate or with regenerative biomaterials.

3. Immediate or Delayed Implant Placement

If a tooth cannot be saved, it can be replaced with a dental implant.
